The Kathmandu University is an independent, not-for-profit, non-government public institution. It is an institution of higher learning dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence.
Kathmandu University was established by an Act of Parliament on November 1991. It started functioning from December 11, 1991.
Mission
The Kathmandu University has the mission to:
Promote all- round development of students' abilities and personalities
Develop an awareness of the role of science and its application in the understanding of problems of contemporary society
Extend and disseminate knowledge and encourage its application
Develop a community of scholars, students and staff in which understanding and wisdom can grow and flourish.
Constitution
The University's Senate governs the Kathmandu University, which is its apex body. The Prime Minister is the chairperson of the senate. Members of the senate include Pro-Chancellor Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Deans of the University, representatives from Parliament and Industry, Mayors of Banepa and Dhulikhel Municipalities, academics, donors, concerned government officials, faculty and student representatives and librarian. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Education are honorary administrative heads.
The Executive Committee, headed by the Vice-Chancellor, is responsible for carrying out policy decisions taken by the Senate. The Academic Council is a focal body of the University on academic matters. It sets the standards and quality of teaching, curriculum, methods of evaluation, nature and types of examinations, and prescribes teaching materials. It also sets the eligibility criteria for admission of students. Its main responsibility is to enhance the academic standard of the Kathmandu University.
The University site is located in about 17 hectares of open land between Dhulikhel and Banepa towns about 28 km east to Kathmandu.
